Law Centre Given 6 Month Reprieve

Gallions Housing Association has allowed Thamesmead Law Centre to remain at their current Harrow Manorway premises until they are able to complete a move to St Paul’s Church in Bentham Way, Thamesmead by October. In February the Law Centre faced closure when Gallions were planning to serve notice on them to quit their premises following health and safety concerns about the building being used. Local Councillor David Leaf, who has been working to achieve an amicable arrangement between Gallions and the Law Centre and whose early intervention and involvement helped delay the closure plans, commented:

“This is good news as Thamesmead Law Centre provides a valuable service to my constituents and local residents throughout Thamesmead and Bexley. It would have been a terrible loss to the local community for it to lose the Law Centre which provides local residents with crucial advice on housing, immigration, welfare benefits and employment matters. I am delighted that it can now stay open and continue looking after the interests of local residents.”

“When I heard from the Law Centre that they were in danger of being closed I immediately contacted Gallions to ask that they look again at the situation which they have done. I am pleased that Gallions and the Law Centre have now reached an amicable arrangement that will ensure that the vital services provided by the Law Centre are not lost.”
