Local Tories have written to the Care Trust Chief Executive and Government Health Minster Patricia Hewitt MP outlining their concerns.
Councillor Sharon Massey Cabinet Member Health and Adult Social Care said “I am concerned about the number of consultations presently taking place in the NHS and the lack of detailed information available. Many areas of our local health services are under review, District Nursing, Speech and Language Therapy, school nursing, Family Planning, Podiatry, Health Visitors and Pharmacy Services as well as the Aphasia Unit at Queen Mary’s being under threat. The final act of indignity to patients in Bexley is the number of continence pads available to patients is being restricted, where will it end?”
Councillor Massey goes onto say “If these cuts were to Cancer Services or heart treatments everyone would be up in arms, but many of the services that are being cut are the hidden services that provide dignity and independence to so many people, peoples quality of lives are being adversely affected.”
Councillor Roy Ashmole, Chairman of the Health and Adult Social Care Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Bexley Council said “As Chairman of the Scrutiny Committee, I have set up a Committee to look at these NHS reforms, we had our first meeting on 13th December and are due to meet again on 11th January at 7.30 pm at the Civic offices, Bexleyheath. I urge all those are affected by these reforms to attend this meeting and support us in fighting for Bexley residents”.
The Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Clement added “I am very concerned with these proposed changes to local services. It is quite amazing that this Government at a time when they claim investment has never been higher in the NHS they can have created such a financial mess. We have a history in Bexley under this Government of under funding of the NHS and now to make matters even worse Bexley money is being taken back by the Labour Government to prop up other failing NHS Trusts. This is a result of continual financial mismanagement by Tony Blair and his government”.
